Smart Labels Introduction

QR Coded labels and barcoded labels are scannable labels with information encoded. Both code formats have different physical dimensions and data storage capacities, there is a direct correlation between the amount of data that a QR code can hold relative to it’s physical size, adding a central image will significantly reduce the amount of data that can be included at any given size.

Some differences between the two different formats are -

LabelMAN® bar coded and QR coded labels and stickers are typically printed with 3-year UV colourfast inks and 3-year UV proof outdoor vinyl media. Higher grade media options are available, also block-out backing and air release adhesive are some of the additional features on offer. The signage inks and media are more durable and weather resistant in outdoor use and also stand up well in warehousing and industrial environments.

While many customers want labels with static data embedded in whichever scannable code is used there are also times when variable data is required. At LabelMAN® we are able to incorporate a data merge into the print file to add variable alpha numeric data strings, bar codes, QR codes and graphical images. An example would be a label with background colour coding, directional indicators (arrows), human readable alpha numeric data and a QR code or bar code.

This is all possible with thermal printers using wax/resin ribbons printing onto paper label stocks and laminating afterwards but the durability of this label type will never match 3-year UV colourfast in on a hard wearing 3-year or 4-year custom cut outdoor weatherproof vinyl label. If you use hand scanners and utilize an appropriately sized label the code can be reliably read by a hand held scanner several bays high in a warehousing environment.

What’s required for an order to proceed ?

Static Data
You just need to send us your artwork preferably in vector format such as a vector .pdf (no, not all pdf’s are vector files) or .eps

Variable Data
As with static data artwork should be provided and the variable data needs to be set up in a spreadsheet with clearly labels column names. We have developed automated routines to manipulate the data into the most suitable arrangement for the merge Your artwork needs to contain live text boxes where the variable data will go with the name of the particular column you require to be inserted into that space. If there are changing background colours or variable graphical content that should be identified when initial contact is made.
